To read fiction means to play a game by which we give sense to the immensity of things that happened, are happening, or will happen, in the actual world...this is the consoling function of narrative.

Teaching produces adrenaline in me -- there's an energy that derives from the exchange of ideas and the generation of creative interpretation. It is extremely gratifying to witness students making connections between the text and the world around them, to begin to consider a value system, to ask questions about existing norms that do not make sense, to find voice and meaning. I strive to make the texts meaningful to students through relevant assignments through which students can find their passion. I like to maintain a classroom that is productive, safe and challenging.
