The Upper School – College Counseling

“The college admissions process is not a game to be won; it is a match to be made.”

The objective of the Green Fields college counseling program is to help students find a match that best represents their academic abilities, their intellectual interests, and their social and personal aspirations.  The program emphasizes the importance of a rigorous course load combined with balanced and committed participation in extracurricular activities.  Colleges look for “depth [of commitment], not breadth”.

The college counselor works with both students and their families as they address the many facets of the college admissions process.  Sophomores first meet with the counselor to go over the results of his/her PSAT test.  Juniors begin working with the counselor at midyear to initiate the discussion that will ultimately result in admission to college.  Some of the topics that the counselor addresses include standardized testing, the Common Application, the essay component of the application, teacher recommendations, college interviews and visits, the financial aid process, and scholarship opportunities.  Each Fall, Green Fields hosts numerous college representatives from across the United States. Students are afforded the opportunity to meet with admissions officers and discuss the schools they represent.  The Green Fields college counselor is available to meet with students and their parents throughout the exciting search and selection process.
