K-3 Chess Team Wins State

Thursday, May 01, 2008   (0 Comments)

Over the past weekend, the Arizona State Chess Championship was held at Mt. Elden Middle School in Flagstaff, AZ, where over 500 participants from Kindergarten (and even preschool) through 12th Grade, along with their entourage, gathered from all over the state to compete in seven rounds of games held over two days. Individual and team trophies were awarded in each of six sections. Team standings were determined by the combined scores from the top 4 players from each team from each school. All three teams from Green Fields received trophies, and four players received individual trophies.

The team of third-graders won first place in the K-3 section.

The K-5 team won 6th place in their division. The K-1 team won 8th place in their section despite having only three players.

The Chess Team will compete next in Pittsburgh in two weeks at the Burt Lerner National Elementary Chess Championship. Good luck, Griffins!

The Green Fields Chess Team is coached by International Master Levon Altounian, the current Arizona State Champion and previous three-time California State Champion and also the highest USCF-rated chess player in the state of Arizona. The Team meets every Friday afternoon after school in Mr. Dorson's room. Come join us – next year or at the Western Alliance Summer Chess Camp being held at Green Fields this summer!
