Star Party Celebrates Astronomy
This year commemorates the four hundredth anniversary of Galileo's invention of the telescope. In honor of that monumental event, the international science community has designated 2009 as the Year of Astronomy. On January 14, 2010, Green Fields will celebrate "Starry Night”. Fifth grade teacher, Anne Davies, is sponsoring this free event in conjunction with the Tucson Astronomy Association. Come join eight astronomers with their telescopes between 6 and 8pm to view the spectacular view from the soccer field.
Fifth grade, along with their teacher, is currently participating in Project Astro. This program pairs teachers with astronomers to teach students more about our universe. The fifth grade is being instructed by local astronomer Richard Munsterteiger. They have designed models of our solar system and the planets, written research papers about the solar and physical characteristics of each planet, and walked a model of our solar system on campus. Before the star party celebration each fifth grader will build their personal Galileoscope.
If you are interested in bringing your telescope and participating in our "Starry Night”, please contact Anne Davies at 520.297.2288. This will be a family event, everyone is encouraged to bring friends and family to the viewing.
